Care of the Elderly

Care of the Elderly

StEPS Podiatry is at the forefront of leading and delivering a highly specialised foot care service for people who are housebound, or living in a care home. StEPS are the first private footcare company to become dementia friendly, and offer a holistic service that not only treats any foot problems, but also cares for the person at the end of the feet.

Foot care for elderly people is about maintaining good foot health, and preventing any complications, such as foot ulcers. General Podiatry care such as toenail clipping, the removal of corns and callous and diabetic foot care for elderly people requires specialist skills, as these patients often present with complicated medical histories, and the often challenging behaviours associated with dementia. Our delivery of general podiatry care for domicilary patients,  is centred around three main pillars of care:

1. falls prevention

2. prevention of pressure sores

3. dementia

We have a dedicated domiciliary foot care team, who are available Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. Our administrative support team liase with carers / managers / family members to arrange a suitable time to visit, manage confidential information such as key safe codes, offer a range of payment options, and provide a pre-appointment reminder telephone call or text.

All of our Podiatrists are HCPC registered and have been trained in the sometimes challenging needs of people with dementia. The highest clinical standards are delivered, with the Podiatrist presenting at treatments with an individual set of sterilised instruments for each patient. Excellent infection controlled is ensured with the Podiatrist wearing a clinical uniform, gloves, and a plastic apron. Following the treatment, the Podiatrist will record all elements of the visit and treatment in the StEPS Podiatry patient notes, as well as the care home clinical records. This includes any diabetic foot assessments which can be copied to the GP.

The Podiatrists are well trained in all aspects of wound care, and are happy to work alongside any other healthcare professional as part of the multidisciplinary team, to achieve best clinical outcomes for patients. Assistance can also be given with regard to footwear, and in particular assessing its suitablility and causing a potential fall.
