Diabetic Foot Care

StEPS Podiatry offers a professional and specialised diabetic foot care service.  We pride ourselves on our up to date evidence based care.  Through involvements with groups such as Foot In Diabetes UK (FDUK), Primary Care Diabetes Society and Diabetes on the Net, we keep up to date with all the latest developments in diabetic foot care.

We offer a comprehensive assessment and treatment pathway for people with diabetes.  This can be for those who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, those who are low, medium or high risk, and for those who wish to find out more about their condition and how to prevent complications.

Footcare for people with diabetes is about promoting good foot health and encouraging regular checks, both by the individual and by a podiatrist and helping to prevent complications developing.  We provide annual diabetic foot checks unless results indicate that it should be carried out more regularly, in which case we do so.

The Diabetic Foot Assessment will assess the blood supply to your feet, identify any neurological deficits, and categorise your risk for foot ulceration.  We use palpation skills as well as a doppler to assess quality of blood supply.  For neurological assessment we have a number of tools at our disposal including monofilament (a strand of synthetic fibre), neurotips (a blunt examination pin) and vibration sensor.

As part of the assessment, we also carry out a plantar pressure analysis.  We use a state of the art pressure mat to look at the distribution of pressure over the sole of the foot.  All that is required is for the individual to stand on the mat and this helps us to see areas of high pressure, that may cause tissue to break down, resulting in ulceration.  These results can then help the podiatrist to develop individual offloading insoles specific to the needs of the individual.

Educating people about diabetes and its effects on the feet is vitally important to us.  We offer tailored and holistic education for people with diabetes, depending on the stage of the disease, and what is relevant to the person’s lifestyle.
